What Reward Should Be Given to Carolers? The Opinion of Priests

EXCLUSIVE ARTICLES08.01.201619:02 Before the Christmas season, some people accomplish an interesting task: they exchange some money in 1, 2 or 5 hryvnia notes. It is because carolers will come. And others also will possibly prepare some snacks as well as sweets. One can wonder what should be the optimal reward for Christmas carolers?

Fr. Andriy Berezivskyi, Church of Christ’s Resurrection, Lviv

I suppose, carolers should be rewarded, let’s say, in an adequate manner, depending on a person’s possibilities. The nuns, for instance, having made a vow of poverty, give some sweets to children. As for the laypeople, it should also be measured according to the situation, but I don’t see anything wrong in recompense. It is also the task for parents, the educational approach; they should explain to their children that caroling is not a way of earning money but a mission of glorifying God who became incarnate.

The response to this question can be both brief and expansive.

To say shortly, caroling is about expressing joy, being derived from the Good News that the Son of God is born. One can say that it is a gratuitous gift of singing, performance, and good wishes from people filled with spiritual joy.

On the other hand, when carolers come to visit someone to share their joy, the listeners mostly feel gratitude for such a gift, and they, inspired with the Good News, also begin to share their own gifts. They also start caroling, sharing food, and sometimes even money.

Therefore, the question whether it is proper to give money to carolers, can be answered this way: the most important thing is to get involved in this event and participate in a spirit of sharing. But what one is to share, whether food, money, a good song, or a carol, is the decision of those who host carolers.

It is hard to say... I think everything depends on the hosts, and how they are able or willing to recompense carolers. If they do not do caroling for the Church or for the needs of the ATO, it is sufficient to give them some sweets or fruit, since, for instance, children can make unwise use of the money or conceal it from their parents...

Fr. Ihor Stelmakh, Father Superior of St. Gerard’s Monastery (urban village Gnizdychiv-Kokhavyno, Zhydachiv district), Church of the Proctection of the Most Holy Mother of God, Redemptorist

It is proper to give money to Christmas carolers if they collect it for the Church, being sure they will not use this money for something wrong and harmful to them. Children can be given sweets also.

    • Christ is Born! I totally agree with Fr. and Dr. Oleh Kindij - " the most important thing is to get involved in this event and participate in a spirit of sharing. But what one is to share, whether food, money, a good song, or a carol, is the decision of those who host carolers".
